What is Fado?
Fado is Portugal's most iconic musical genre, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2011. It is a music of deep soul, marked by saudade — a uniquely Portuguese feeling that expresses a nostalgic melancholy mixed with hope and love.
The origins of Fado date back to the early 19th century, in the streets of Lisbon, particularly in the historic neighborhoods of Alfama, Mouraria, and Bairro Alto. Although its exact origins are debated — with African, Brazilian, and Moorish influences — Fado evolved to become the most authentic expression of the Portuguese soul.
The History of Fado
The history of Fado is inseparable from the history of Lisbon. Its roots reach back to the first half of the 19th century, when the city was a bustling port, a meeting place of cultures from around the world. Sailors, migrants, and common people gave birth to a music that reflected life, love, and the inevitability of fate.
The singer who most contributed to the internationalization of Fado was Amália Rodrigues (1920–1999), known as the 'Queen of Fado'. With her unmistakable voice and unique interpretation, she brought Fado to stages around the world and elevated it to an internationally recognized art form.
Today, Fado is performed worldwide by artists of Portuguese origin and by lovers of this musical genre. In Toronto, Fado House is proud to be the link between the Portuguese Fado tradition and new generations, presenting the finest performers of this sublime art.
